Chapter Thirteen

Immediately after entering the house, we were bombarded by a loud band playing a mix of techno and heavy metal. People laughed and chatted. There were definitely more here than had been at the service. The back of the house was all windows, which had been opened up so that the party had spilled outside.

And it was definitely a party.

“Uh…” Shannon said.

“Right there with you.” The place was like something out of Architectural Digest. White wood, with washed-out fabrics on French country furniture. Pops of color came from the artwork, and the floors were stained a dark hickory.

Was that a Rembrandt over the fireplace?

It couldn’t be.

Greg glanced back at me with one eyebrow up. Now maybe he believed me. These people were not grieving, only going through the motions. I know how that sounds. I’ve been to a few wakes, but they weren’t like this.

This wasn’t the somber reception most people had after a service or funeral. The kind of thing where you awkwardly told the grieving family you were so sorry for their loss, and then you ate bad chicken salad that made you throw up the next three days.

Or maybe that just happened to me.

A huge spread of food had been laid out on several tables lined up on the left side of the great room. Drinks were being served at the bar off the kitchen.

Hilary came to great us. Her face was flushed, and she held a plate full of shrimp. “Isn’t it a great celebration? We didn’t want to do anything too sad. Yarn Goddess would have been bored to death with that sort of thing. We’re throwing the kind of party she would have had.”

“Oh, that’s nice,” I said, feeling horrid inside for all the judging I’d been doing.

Perhaps, and I do mean perhaps, Greg was right. They were trying to celebrate her life and going about it in a different way. It wasn’t like there was just one way to grieve.

Stop being so judgey.

I would—if just one of them seemed sad. Well, except for Hilary. Her eyes were puffy and her nose red.

“Are you feeling okay?”

She blew out a quick breath and then nodded, but tears brimmed.

“I’m sure she would have loved it,” Shannon said beside me. She was so much better at these sorts of social things. “It’s a beautiful setup. Did you do all of this?”

Hilary smiled. “Yes. I’ve done so many events for her, it’s in my blood. The band’s a bit loud. I’m going to ask them to tone it down a bit. She always said music should be a touch of atmosphere and nothing more. You go get some food. There are tables outside where you can sit. It’s getting a bit crowded in here.”

Greg was talking to Sam. My brother was good at his job. He had a way of getting people to talk to him. I liked to give him a hard time, but he knew what he was doing.

As much as I wanted to know what they were discussing, Shannon pulled me toward the food.
